DIY : Dying your virgin hair extensions at Home!!

One of the major advantages of virgin hair extensions is the versatility with color and styles. Here's a quick reminder that you can do anything with virgin hair extensions that you can do to your natural hair. Many weave wearers dye extensions to get an exact match to their natural hair color. It's very effective and turns out beautiful!

Do keep in mind that Virgin hair extensions are the best type of weaves for dyeing your hair. Virgin Remy hair extensions have not been chemically processed in any way, so they can be dyed without causing hardly any damage to your hair. While it’s best to avoid overly harsh chemicals, virgin Remy extensions can be lightened or darkened as natural hair. Experts advise that you should not attempt to dye non-Remy hair weaves. This kind of synthetic hair extensions have been chemically treated, which strips the strands to their weakest. They are generally not strong enough to be dyed.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED TO DYE YOUR HUMAN EXTENSIONS:

• Hair Dye - recommended is creme of nature dye
• Gloves
• Developer
• Comb
• Shampoo and Conditioner

1. First you need to buy hair dye, developer, gloves, and an applicator bottle from a beauty supply store or salon. You should avoid purchasing hair dye from a box at the drugstore because it will be a lot more difficult to match your hair color that way, unless you're going for an ombre or colored effect.

Gently comb through your extensions to get rid of any tangles and if you have any styling products on your extensions, it's important to wash them out first as well. After washing and combing out the extensions make sure they dry thoroughly. Since using a hair dryer is not recommended, allow them to dry overnight before applying the hair dye the next day.

2. Prepare the hair color mixture. Put on your gloves and mix up the right amount of hair color and developer together. After pouring your hair dye and developer into the applicator bottle, mix them up together by shaking the bottle for about one minute.

3. Now coat every single strand of your hair extensions with the hair dye. In this case it's a better idea to use too much dye rather than not using enough. Use a comb to distribute the hair dye while applying it. Once you're done applying the dye, place the extensions on a hair towel and read the instructions so that you know how long they need to remain on the towel.

4. After allowing the extensions to soak in the dye for the allotted amount of time,  it's time to rinse the hair dye out of the extensions. Use warm water and afterwards apply conditioner. It's also important to comb through the hair extensions after applying the conditioner for even application and also to moisturize your tresses. After gently combing through the extensions, wash the conditioner out using cold water. This will seal in the hair color and make the hair shiny. For a final step either use a blow-dryer to dry the hair extensions or allow them to air-dry (which is recommended).

What to do before your sew-in

Preparing your natural hair before your sew-in is equally as important as a quality installation. Making sure that your hair is at its healthiest will help you avoid the dangers of a sew-in.

Here are a few key steps to take before your installation:

WASHING YOUR HAIR:

Removing debris or foul smells is the first step in preparing your hair for you sew-in. Typically, three washes will ensure a cleansed scalp. Your first wash may not produce lather  but this is okay, it is just an indication that your hair is not clean. The second & third wash will then produce the lather that we identify as “clean hair”. I enjoy using products with coconut or olive oil to penetrate my hair with natural moisturizing oils.

CONDITIONING YOUR HAIR:

When preparing your hair for your sew-in, condition can be more important than the shampooing process. Because shampooing may cleanse the hair of its natural oils you must replace them with a moisture-intense conditioner.

MOISTURIZING/OILING THE SCALP:

Dos1. Co-wash your wig every two weeks. This process would help your wig maintain its look and shine. Put the conditioner on your wig, lather and let it sit for about 30 minutes before washing it off.

2. Let your wigs air dry after you do your co-washing. To dry, place it on a hanger and let it drip dry outside.

3. Apply a heat protectant before you put any heat on your wig. This helps prevent the hair from breaking and drying out. And we all know there’ s nothing worse than a dry wig.

4. Apply Argan oil on your wig if you want to add some shine to your hair. It will not weigh your hair down and will ensure that your hair is bouncy and has great movement.

5. Remember, flexi rods/bendy rollers are your best friend. Putting flexi rods on your wigs before you sleep will guarantee full and fabulous bouncy curls by the morning.

6. Try to get a mannequin head or something stable for your wig to sit on whenever your wig is not being worn. My mannequin never leaves the side of my bed and it’s a wigs perfect home.

7. Use Youtube as a guide if you want to also get a visual on how to do these things to keep your wigs looking fab.

Don’ts1. Never apply heavy creams or oils on your wigs. These products will just weigh down your wig and will take any type of body out your wig which we definitely want to avoid.

2. Don’t shampoo or condition your wig while it’s on your head because it’s easier and better to hold it in your hand.
